Dysthimic Disorder is a mild form of depression. Dysthimic Disorder’s depressive symptoms are different in terms of there duration. People with dythimic disorder may suffer for years and although the symptoms may be less severe then depression in many cases if may be worse due to the extended period of time.
Common Symptoms of Dysthimic Disorder may include, but are not limited to, loss of interest in daily activities, feeling sad or down, poor appetite, sleep problems, avoidance, trouble concentrating and making decisions, and fatigue. Additional symptoms that are not common but can occur with dysthimic disorder are, anxiety, panic, and worry.
It is not known what exactly causes Dysthimic Disorder but scientists believe it comes from the same roots that depression does. These causes include:
Biochemical Factors: naturally occurring brain chemicals called neurotransmitters, which are linked to mood
Genes: people whose biological family members also have the condition
Environmental Causes: are situations in your life that are difficult to cope with, such as the loss of a loved one, financial problems and high stress.
Risk factors include a family member with depression or dysthimia, being female and stressful events that occur throughout life.
People with Dysthimic disorder should not ignore the condition. Seeking help from a medical professional who can assist you can bring some people relief. Treatments include medications and psychotherapy.
After seeking help from medical professional and following their treatment plan an individual can also help themselves. Things like exercise, a supportive group of family and friends, and good eating habits can assist an individual with symptoms of dysthimia.
